A senior official of Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar police, told PTI, “We will help the Delhi Police in connection with the Shraddha Walkar murder case if they need help or approach us for help.” Poonawala (28) has been arrested by the Delhi Police for killing Walkar, who had been staying in Vasai, in May this year, hacking the body into 35 pieces before dumping it at different places in the national capital over several days.
“After registering a missing complaint (filed by her father), we have sent all the details to the Delhi Police. If they (Delhi police) approach us, we will extend all possible help to them,” the official said. “The family members of accused Poonawala left their apartment in Vasai about 15 days ago and we have no knowledge about them. How can we summon them for questioning as nothing has happened in our jurisdiction,” he said.
Vasai police in Palghar district have already interrogated the accused in the missing Walkar case, the official said. “However, we are closely following the developments in the murder case,” he added.
According to the Vasai town police, Walkar, a media graduate, worked at a call center in Mumbai’s Malad area and met Poonawala through a dating app in 2019. The woman’s friend, who had alerted her family members after not contacting her said: “Once Walkar (when she lived in Vasai) had sent me a message asking me to come and take her or Aaftab would kill her.
The Delhi Police on Tuesday took Poonawala to forest areas in south Delhi’s Chhatarpur where he allegedly dumped Walkar’s body parts after killing her. Walkar and Poonawala were in a live-in relationship and they moved to Delhi after a mutual understanding to work together. However, the motive behind the gruesome murder was not known.
