The Colorado Springs Shooter’s father was more concerned that his son might be gay than the actual murders?!

[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]

It certainly isn’t a shock to hear that the Colorado Springs shooter had a terrible home life. We’re talking about a 22-year-old man who walked into a nightclub with a rifle and killed five strangers. But this is… something completely different.

Days after a horrific mass shooting at an LGBTQ-friendly Club Q, CBS 8 from San Diego tracked down the gunman’s father, who lives there – and hasn’t seen his child in years. The excerpts from his interview are … shocking to say the least.

First we find out that the man is a porn star. He was also on A&E reality show Intervention due to meth addiction. Shockingly, he didn’t even know his son was alive until months before the shooting. He explained that the mother had told him in 2016 that their son had died by suicide:

“I thought he was dead. I mourn his loss. I had a meltdown and thought I had lost my son.”

This may have been to protect their son – who would have been a minor at the time – from He. He explained that they had tried to create as much distance as possible because of his past:

“His mother told me he changed his name because I was inside Intervention and I had been a porn star.”

That may be true, but there may be another reason for the name change. Late Tuesday night, the shooter’s attorneys also mentioned they are not binary — and go by their/their first names. That alone might have been reason enough to create a barrier between father and son. If the father knew, of course. On The Daily Beastthe shooter’s mother apparently did not know about the non-binary identity, because in text messages from the day of the shooting, the mother refers to the shooter by his first names.

In both cases, what comes next in the interview with the father is perhaps the most homophobic thing we’ve ever heard. It’s incredibly disturbing, but it’s an important context…

On Sunday, the father received a call about the shooting – about the worst thing a parent can imagine. His reaction was terrible. He said at the sale:

“They started telling me about the incident, a shooting involving many people. And then I keep finding out that it’s a gay bar. I said, ‘God, is he gay?’ I was scared: ‘S**t, is he gay?’ And he’s not gay, so I said, “Phew!”.

We are sorry. You found out your son killed many innocent people in a mass shooting and your biggest concern was the possibility that they were gay?!?

JFC, people. Do you see what we are dealing with? This is the same kind of insane, irrational, overwhelming hatred that drives people to commit violence against the LGBTQ community. Valuing this consideration of sexual preference over actual human life. This is homophobia, folks. It is an obsession. It is hate. Fuck And yes, that kind of hate can be instilled! The Daily Beast also reports that the shooter’s neighbor heard them use anti-gay slurs, so…

This man actually paused to talk about the massacre of a**king by his son to reassure the audience that they weren’t gay:

“You know Mormons don’t practice gays. We don’t do gays. There are no gays in the Mormon Church. We don’t do gays.”

The gunman has previously been confirmed to be a member of the LDS Church, but does not appear to be in training. Not the case, obviously. The point is that this father’s homosexuality was stronger than his sympathy for the victims or even concern for his son’s actions.

After reassured that his son was not gay, he was able to process the shooting news. He took the courageous stand that mass shootings are wrong:

“There is no excuse for going and killing people.” If you’re killing people, there’s something wrong. That’s not the answer.”

Such great advice from Father of the Year, thank you.
